How to Make Axolotl Pellets Sink

Soak the pellets in tank water for 30-60 seconds before feeding. This softens them and makes them drop straight to the bottom where your axolotl can find them easily. You can also use a turkey baster or feeding tongs to place pellets directly in front of your pet. Some owners poke tiny holes in floating pellets with a toothpick to help them sink faster.

Why Pellets Float in the First Place

Most pellets contain air pockets that form during manufacturing. This keeps them lightweight for shipping and storage, but it creates a problem at feeding time. Floating food frustrates axolotls because they’re bottom feeders who don’t naturally look up for meals.

When pellets bob on the surface, your axolotl might miss feeding time completely. Worse yet, if they do swim up to grab floating food, they can accidentally gulp air. This causes bloating and discomfort that lasts for hours or even days.

Pre-soaking solves both issues. Drop the pellets into a small cup of tank water and wait. You’ll see them expand slightly as they absorb moisture. Once they feel heavy and soft between your fingers, they’re ready to feed. The whole process takes less than a minute but makes a huge difference.

Another trick: crush larger pellets into smaller pieces before soaking. Smaller bits sink faster and are easier for younger axolotls to eat. Use a spoon or your fingers to break them down into manageable sizes.

Getting Better Results at Feeding Time

Location matters just as much as preparation. Drop the soaked pellets near your axolotl’s favorite resting spot. They rely heavily on smell to find food, so placing pellets close by gives them the best chance of noticing dinner.

Feed during their active hours, which usually means evening or nighttime. Axolotls are nocturnal creatures who become more alert after sunset. Morning feedings often go ignored because they’re still sleepy and less interested in hunting for food.

Don’t overfeed just because pellets are sinking properly now. A good portion is about as much as the size of your axolotl’s head. Younger ones eat daily, while adults only need food every 2-3 days. Leftover pellets create waste that fouls the water quickly.

Some brands sink better than others right out of the container. Hikari and Rangen pellets are known for sinking naturally, though they still benefit from a quick soak. Experiment with different brands to see what works best for your setup and your axolotl’s preferences.

Common Questions About Sinking Pellets

How long can I leave soaked pellets in the tank?
Remove uneaten pellets after 10-15 minutes. Soaked food breaks apart fast and pollutes water.

Can I soak pellets overnight?
Don’t soak longer than a few minutes. They’ll turn mushy and lose their shape completely.

What if my axolotl still ignores sinking pellets?
Try wiggling them with tongs to mimic live prey movement. Some axolotls need that extra visual cue.

Should I switch to a different food entirely?
Earthworms are always a reliable backup. Many axolotls prefer them over pellets anyway.
